How We Rate Gear

The honest version of how every score, badge, and price tier on this site actually works — so you can decide how much weight to give them.

The six dimensions

Every item is rated 0-100 on six dimensions, used by the Match Score tool on every item page and by the Gear Quiz. Each is a judgment call based on genuine research, not a live market feed — think of them as a considered opinion, not a measurement.

Audio Fidelity

Overall sound quality and resolution — not whether it's 'clean,' just how high-fidelity it is.

Flexibility

How much creative routing, patching, or hands-on control the unit offers.

Portability

How practical it is to move, carry, or fit into a small space.

Ease of Maintenance

How easy the unit is to service and keep running over the years — not how easy it is to learn.

Ease of Use

How quickly you can get a good result — the learning curve, not long-term reliability.

Tonal Neutrality

How clean and transparent the sound is (high) versus colored and characterful (low) — neither is 'better,' they're different goals.

Why each category only shows four

Not every dimension is meaningful for every kind of gear — Portability barely varies among large-format mixing consoles (they're all "not portable"), so comparing consoles on that axis wouldn't tell you much. Each category surfaces only the four dimensions that actually distinguish one item from another within it; the underlying data still has all six, so cross-category tools like the quiz's "any category" mode still work.

Sourcing

Every item in the database is real, existing gear — nothing is invented to pad the count. Where an item's era genuinely predates the decade a section is framed around (a few pedals and drum machines debuted in the 60s-80s but became culturally ubiquitous later), we say so plainly in the era field rather than reframe the history to fit. Specs, pros, and cons reflect genuine research and are written to be useful, not to oversell — every item includes real trade-offs, not just strengths.
